the story behind koir

Founder Kat Thomas

KOIR draws its name from coir — the natural coconut fiber in Malayalam, known for its resilience, strength, and grounding roots. It felt fitting: a name tied to something organic, enduring, and unbreakable. One that honors the idea of rebuilding from the inside out. A name that reflects a woman who bends but does not break — who grows stronger through what she sheds.

That meaning became the foundation for everything that followed.

KOIR was born in a moment of stripping life back to its essentials — the kind of turning point that forces you to let go of what no longer fits and rebuild with intention. What looked like loss became clarity. What felt like breaking became the start of expansion.

After more than a decade of experience in the fashion industry, spanning buying, styling, luxury retail, vintage sourcing, and brand-building, I had seen firsthand what endures and what fades. I understood how garments are made, how quality reveals itself over time, and how personal style evolves when it’s rooted in intention rather than trend.

That experience shaped how KOIR operates today. Every piece is intentionally sourced, ordered, reviewed in hand, and approved before it ever becomes part of the KOIR collection. If it doesn’t meet our standard, it doesn’t make the cut.

So when it came time to rebuild, I did so with discernment.

I stepped away from identities, expectations, and attachments that no longer aligned. In the space that opened, a new version of myself finally had room to form — stronger, grounded, and far more intentional.

There is quiet power in the in-between: in rebuilding slowly, choosing deliberately, and creating a life — and a wardrobe — that reflects who you are becoming rather than who you’ve outgrown.

ROOTED IN CRAFT, SHAPED BY PLACE

My family roots trace back to Kerala, India, where clothing was never incidental. What women wore mattered — not as display, but as expression. Garments were often handmade, chosen with care, and imbued with character. Dress was ritual, not trend. That early exposure instilled a deep respect for well-made pieces — for texture, intention, and the quiet confidence that comes from wearing something thoughtfully crafted.

Over time, my style was further shaped by place. Living between Aspen and New York City introduced a duality that continues to define KOIR: the grounded ease and subtle western influence of mountain life paired with the restraint, polish, and edge of the city.

Layered into that sensibility are years spent traveling, often returning to warmer climates and coastal places around the world — beaches where lightness, movement, and fabric in motion become essential. That balance — strength and softness, structure and ease — is what ultimately shaped the KOIR point of view.

FASHION AS TRANSFORMATION

Fashion has always been a catalyst for transformation — a way to step into a more grounded, confident version of yourself. The right piece can shift your entire energy: uncertainty into clarity, stillness into presence, hesitation into direction.

Clothing has the power to make a woman feel aligned — magnetic, self-possessed, untouchable. KOIR was built on that belief: that what we wear can elevate our state of being and anchor us into a version of ourselves we are actively becoming.

THE THREADS THAT INSPIRE US

KOIR sits at the crossroads of luxury modern design, minimal silhouettes, and the subtle artistry of Indian draping traditions.

You’ll see it in the way our pieces move — effortless, fluid, confident without trying. Silhouettes remain refined yet soft: clean lines, intentional drape, textures that speak quietly, shapes that feel natural rather than forced.

Some designs nod to saris and lehengas — not as costume, but in the way fabric wraps, ties, and falls with purpose. This influence appears in our wrap skirts, crop sets, and pieces engineered to frame the body with understated elegance.

It’s a fusion of influences — modern, organic, draped, and rooted in heritage — woven into pieces that feel both effortless and elevated.

A CURATED CLOSET WITH PURPOSE

KOIR isn’t built on fast trends or mass-market repetition. It’s a wardrobe collected over time — intentional, textural, quietly luxurious.

Our pieces are:

  • handpicked and released in limited quantities

  • selected only after in-hand review

  • chosen for silhouette, drape, texture, and finish

  • elevated without being loud

  • feminine with an edge

  • timeless with modern restraint

  • designed to mix effortlessly across seasons

Every KOIR piece is ordered, inspected, styled, and shipped by our team. From selection to final packaging, each order is handled in-house with care and intention.

Each piece is selected with the same standard I now live by: quality over chaos, depth over noise, intention over excess.

KOIR mirrors that shift — elegant, minimal, sensual, quietly rebellious, and grounded in self-respect.

WHO SHE IS

The KOIR woman is intentional.
She chooses herself.
She dresses like she knows her worth.

She moves with purpose, not noise — quiet confidence, unmistakable presence.

She walks away from what drains her and steps toward what expands her. Her closet reflects that evolution: clean lines, rich textures, effortless elegance, and the subtle architecture of a woman stepping into her next chapter.

OUR PURPOSE

KOIR aims to redefine what small-scale fashion can be: thoughtful sourcing, elevated design, and boutique-level curation without mass-market sameness.

Each piece is meant to feel personal.
To feel like discovery.
To evoke that grounding moment of: This is so me.

Because it’s never just about what we wear — it’s about who we’re becoming, what we’re shedding, and the futures we’re choosing.

KOIR is a love letter to evolution — a curated closet for the woman moving forward with intention, elegance, and unshakable strength.
